DUKE BLUE DEVILS FOOTBALL
Logo
Logos and symbols must read clearly from a distance (i.e., when they are very small) in order to be successful. Back up as far as you can from your computer screen, and the difference in clarity between the two images should be obvious.
(Plus, this guy is clearly too old to go to a frat party. I mean, come on, he'd be the creepy old guy in the corner. But give him a shave, a shot of Botox and a simplified cowl with a nice, pointy new horn, and he's ready to do some damage.)
Every time I see this logo on ESPN (especially the really, really tiny thumbnail versions they like to use) I notice how the middle of the "D" (negative space) tends to bleed together with the Devil figure, obscuring the clarity of the image and making it really tough to read. By eliminating the extraneous details on the figure (beard, eyebrow, middle of ear), using only a slightly thicker outline, and allowing the devil himself to serve as the middle of the "D", you now have a much clearer, bolder icon that defies whatever shrinkage ESPN can throw at it.
And yes, it looks great on the helmet... NEXT >>
